Can you be too courteous of a driver?
The questions was pondered in my mind as I’m giving someone an invitation to make a lane change on the packed 405. The driver had the signal on and was edging to make the lane change in front of me, but wouldn’t do it. I guess room to land a 747 wasn’t enough room to slide in. Now I have flashed the lights to let the bewildered driver know that it is OK to make the change. No action, and now I’m getting mad. Does he/she not understand the international language of driving? Is it too much room, my mind is reeling. Then it happens… someone honks at me for driving too slow. Damn. I caused someone else a problem by being ‘Too Courteous’, and the minute that I give up and close the gap they begin the lane change. The time for this seemed like an eternity.
The more I think about it happens all the time, has it happened to you? Have you ever tried to be nice or cut some poor snook some slack but they just can’t figure it out?
I’m now cutting back my friendliness factor, I think you can be too giving on the highways…
