Having had friends and family with various Firebirds and Trans Am, yes even a Tempest, I’m finally catching on posting an EZ-Read firing order for the Pontiac V8 engines. These work on 1955 to the last of the era Pontiac’s in 1981. One of the first engines I helped out on was a friends 1970 T/A with a 400. In recent days I look at the 1970+ Firebirds vs. Camaro styles and really like the Firebird and Trans Am much better. The interior was hands down better, nicer dash and the T/A had a great steering wheel. This is NOT for any 350 Chevy corporate engines used in Pontiac’s, see Chevy Firing order for those.

The firing order works for the following Pontiac V8 Engines

  • 265 (4.3L)
  • 287
  • 301 (4.9L) including Turbo
  • 303 (5.0L)
  • 317
  • 326
  • 347
  • 350 (Not Chevy!)
  • 370
  • 389
  • 400 (6.6L)
  • 421
  • 428
  • 455

Note : Remember that the position of the spark plug wires on the distributor cap does not matter AS LONG AS THE ORDER IS MAINTAINED! If you need to rotate the cap for any reason don’t worry about pulling the wires and rotating them around. Again this is fine as long as the firing order sequence for the engine is maintained and you check your engines timing. Some HEI wire retainers also have helpful stamped number for firing order but make sure it’s right for your engine.

So if you want to cut and paste the Pontiac V8 Firing order it is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 with a counterclockwise distributor rotation
