Big Block Ford - FE Head Torque Sequence
Here are the some torque values and sequence instructions for torquing the cylinder heads on a Ford FE motor.
This includes such engines as the 390, 427, and 428 engine. Their may be an odd 406 and others in the mix
but not sure. Ask the internet if you are unsure. Their are a couple of torque options depending on Year and
head style. Also listed are the torque specs for the Edelbrock Aluminum FE head which is buried in their
documentation.
Big Block Ford 390, 427 and 428 (FE) Head Bolt Torque Specifications
90 Ft/Lbs
Ford 427 Iron Head 1963 to 1967 Torque Specifications
110 Ft/Lbs
Edelbrock Performer Ford FE Aluminum Head Torque Specifications
110 Ft/Lbs Top Row of Bolts (9, 5, 1, 3, 7)
100 Ft/Lbs Bottom Row of Bolts (10, 6, 2, 4, 8)
It's recommended to torque your bolts in several steps. I would do 3 steps, first step 30Ft/Lbs, Second
Step 60Ft/Lbs and the final torque value. For any bolts/studs that are into water user an appropriate
sealer. For bolts studs that don't use lube. ARP has a nice proven bolt lube for head bolts as well. Also
Note that for Edelbrock recommends a re-torque after a good cool down cycle to ensure proper torque.
I don't have any experience with them so use the information as you will.
Rocker Shaft Bolt Torque
Iron Heads
45 ft./lbs. with 30W Oil
For Edelbrock Aluminum Heads their specs show
35 ft./lbs. with ARP Lube
45 ft./lbs. with 30W Oil
40-45 ft./lbs. with 30W Oil
NOTE: If running head studs follow the studs torque recommendations.
